Wonders of soya milk for the brain
Besides being good for the body, did you know that soya has cognitive benefits as well? Read on to find out more.
Improves memory and mental flexibility
Researchers investigated the effects of a high soya diet in student volunteers. After 10 weeks, the volunteers showed significant improvements in short-term and long-term memory and in mental flexibility. Soya is rich in isoflavones which act on the memory centre in the brain, helping the nerves to form new links.
Improved cognitive ability in postmenopausal women
The decline in estrogen after menopause can lead to cognitive impairments. A study investigated the effects of soya on the cognitive ability in postmenopausal women. After 12 weeks, significant improvements were observed, including their planning ability and performance in sustained attention tasks. This is due to isoflavones in soya having structural similarities to estrogen.
